Expand IntelWines: AI and Blockchain in the wine industry
Smart agriculture is becoming increasingly important due to its huge benefits in terms of both logistics and economics. At the IoT Digital Innovation Hub, we participated in the digitization of the wine company Pago de Carraovejas within the framework of the Expand IntelWines project. A company with more than fifty years of experience that has carved an image of quality in wine thanks to the effort to establish a high level of control over all its production processes.
Pago de Carraovejas is immersed in the digitalization of the processes in the wine value chain, from the vineyard to the glass, in order to optimize resources, reduce costs and improve quality and food safety, for which it is implementing, among other things, a product traceability platform at all stages.
A new intelligent palletizing system has also been designed to optimize warehouse logistics. The arrangement of the boxes on each pallet is done by the workers who have experience in this process. Transport companies charge according to the number of pallets shipped.
In this regard, Pago de Carraovejas seeks a solution to increase the load capacity of each pallet, thus reducing the number of pallets needed in shipments and reducing transportation costs. Such a solution should provide the optimal arrangement of boxes on each pallet for workers in the palletizing process through an interface that respects ergonomics in the work environment.
- Provide the optimal arrangement of boxes on each pallet for workers in the palletizing process through an interface that favors ergonomics in the work environment.
- Cost reduction
- Increase of the average load capacity of each pallet.
- Reduction of the average time spent palletizing products
- Reduction of the average workload of the worker.
The implementation of this new system will generate a 20% reduction in the costs associated with pallet shipments, due to the reduction in the total number of packages and the reduction in their volumetric weight. It will also reduce the average time spent on palletizing products by 15%. These are just some of the advantages of the application of technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain in the digitization of agriculture.
This initiative has been made possible thanks to funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program through the open call EXPAND SmartAgriHubs within the SmartAgriHubs project, funded through grant agreement No. 818182 (call H2020-RUR-2018-1).
