The digital transformation in Spain through improvements in education.

The European Commission's Digital Economy and Societies Index, DESI 2019, places Spain in tenth place among the twenty-eight countries of the European Union. Spain has moved up the ranking if we look at the indices from previous years.

Nevertheless, in comparison to the rest of the EU population, Spain continues to be below the average in terms of digital skills. To continue progressing Spain must begin to develop a strategic plan that will help its citizens acquire advanced digital skills. 

Moreover, in view of these data, the Spanish Association of Digital Economy calls for a national reform in school education that will include the development of digital skills in the curricula of schools at all educational stages. In addition to these changes, the association also calls for improvements in both vocational and university degrees in ICT.

Spain is still far from the world leaders in this field, but with the correct measures it is it is capable of boosting its innovation and investment in R&D.

Several indicators in this report such as the fourth: "Integration of technology by companies" or the sixth "ICT Research and Development" have a direct relationship with the work developed by the Air Institute in the promotion and research of technologies such as Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), Social Computing, Blockchain or Artificial Intelligence, by means of the expertise of their members coordinating and collaboraring in European, national and regional R+D projects.
