The 13th MIS4TEL International Congress of Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning will be held in Guimarães (Portugal) from July 12 to 14, 2023, in parallel to the PAAMS'23 International Conference. This edition aims to offer the different perspectives and complementary voices coming from the multidisciplinary field of TEL, we invite you to send contributions related to the theme of the conference.

The fourth industrial revolution is rapidly evolving thanks to the development of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digitization, Robotics and the Internet of Things (IoT). This has created unprecedented opportunities for industrial growth, but has also had a profound and lasting impact on the field of education. Cutting-edge technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and AI Virtual Assistants, are already influencing educational processes and their impact is expected to increase in the near future.

These technologies enable hands-on learning experiences and visualize educational contexts, systems or concepts in an engaging way. In addition, they offer teachers the opportunity to provide differentiated instructions and personalized learning paths according to the style and speed of each student, which encourages self-regulated learning and allows for a clearer understanding of the learning progress. Finally, the proliferation of cell phones, portable devices and online learning platforms has significantly increased the accessibility of education.

Despite these advantages, technology-enhanced learning (TEL) has also raised many important issues that have yet to be resolved. TEL has given rise to concerns related to over-reliance on technology, the digital divide, cybersecurity, and issues related to professional skills development. It is crucial to carefully consider both the opportunities and challenges associated with TEL and address them proactively to maximize its benefits and minimize its risks in educational and training environments.

This workshop is jointly proposed by five EU Horizon projects that have been recently funded by the Digital Europe program and under the theme "integration of new emerging technologies in education and training" and focuses on current trends, insights and research results related to technological enhancement. It aims to present and elaborate state-of-the-art research on related methodologies and intelligent systems and discuss their potential applications in different industrial and learning contexts.

MIS4TEL welcomes the submission of papers and gives preference to the topics listed in the call for papers. All submitted papers will undergo a thorough review process; each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three experts in the field for relevance, originality, significance, quality and clarity.

Papers must consist of original, relevant and unpublished solid research results related to any of the conference themes.

The Scientific Committee of the co-located conferences, in collaboration with the guest editors, will select the best papers from those submitted to the conferences to be considered for publication in the Special Issues.

Lines of research

  • Pedagogical implementation of learning technologies: effective implementation of VR, AR, and AI-enabled learning systems requires technical expertise and a proper understanding of educational pedagogy.
  • Human-centered approach to AI in education: AI-enabled learning systems should be designed to accommodate all learners, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds, and should also be designed and implemented responsibly and ethically in education considering the needs and well-being of students and teachers.
  • Policy recommendations regarding AI in education: there should be adequate policy to ensure that AI-enabled learning systems are used responsibly and effectively in educational settings.
