Creation of European Cloud Service Initiated in Salamanca by Partners of European NOUS Project

Between 8 and 10 January, the AIR Institute hosted the kickoff meeting of the European project "A catalyst for EuropeaN ClOUd Services in the era of data  spaces, high-performance and edge computing” (NOUS)”. It is an initiative with a strong consortium of 21 partners from 11 European countries.

NOUS presents itself as a provider of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and of platform as a service (PaaS) in the cloud, with a strong focus on decentralisation. The goal is to incorporate edge devices, supercomputers and even quantum computers across the HPC network, consolidating computational and data storage resources.

The three key types of components of the NOUS project:

  • Computational components: responsible for executing calculations.

  • Edge components: responsible for communicating with peripheral devices such as sensors, actuators and IoT devices.

  • Data storage components: responsible for data storage and management.

Each component is individually studied to achieve significant advances. However, the real power of NOUS lies in the synergy of these components, creating an end-to-end cloud architecture and services that will enable Europe to process massive amounts of data efficiently.

The project will be deployed in four use cases that will test these technologies in real-world situations, allowing industry leaders to evaluate their effectiveness. With a focus on collaboration, the NOUS architecture will be open source, encouraging participation and capitalisation by companies and organisations.

NOUS will also embark on a series of workshops and collaborative activities with leading organisations such as Data Spaces Support Centre, Gaia-X, FIWARE and EOSC.
