Two AIR Institute researchers awarded a €5,000 grant for their project on ethical and legal AI integration in healthcare

Fernando Cagigas Villar and Alberto López Tejerina, researchers at AIR Institute and graduates in Biomedical Engineering, have been awarded the CTS grant from the Tecnovitae Foundation for their project on the ethical and legal integration of artificial intelligence in the European healthcare sector.

Alongside María Flores Ceballos from the BISITE Research Group at the University of Salamanca, they chose to undertake this initiative as they believe that “there are currently a number of inconsistencies in the regulation of artificial intelligence in healthcare, and our role as researchers is to establish a set of recommendations for a future common framework for AI in the healthcare sector.” This is precisely what their award-winning project aims to achieve: the establishment of a common ethical and regulatory framework, ensuring that technological development upholds essential principles of autonomy, fairness, and transparency.

This €5,000 grant will enable the team to conduct an in-depth review of the ‘AI Act’, the European Artificial Intelligence Law, which came into force in February. Following this, they will be able to develop their recommendations and ethical principles for the common framework, which will later be published and disseminated.

At AIR Institute, we would like to congratulate our colleagues on this well-deserved recognition and for contributing an idea that has the potential to make a global impact on the transparent use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
